Examining African American English (AAE) in Schools: Implications for Instruction LIMITED
Saturday March 22, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am PDT
TBA
This presentation examines the linguistic features of African American English (AAE) and its implications for instruction in schools. It highlights the challenges that arise when educators lack awareness of AAE, often leading to misinterpretations of students’ abilities and lower academic expectations for African American students. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of teacher familiarity with AAE to ensure accurate assessment of students’ skills, particularly in areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and writing. The presentation underscores that AAE represents linguistic differences, not deficiencies, and calls for a shift in perspective to better support African American students. Evidence will be drawn from second-grade students within Aldine Independent School District, illustrating the impact of recognizing and respecting these linguistic distinctions. The session aims to equip educators with the knowledge to foster equitable learning environments and empower all students to achieve their full potential.

Mas allá de las letras: Leer nuestro mundo y empoderar a las familias a través del lenguaje y la literatura. LIMITED
Saturday March 22, 2025 2:00pm - 2:50pm PDT
TBA
The Mas allá de las letras reading club at FCUniversity empowers families by embracing their first language as a tool for discovery and social advocacy. Rooted in Freire’s idea that “reading the world begins with reading the word,” the club fosters critical discussions around literary works by Latin and Mexican-American authors. These sessions enhance cultural awareness, strengthen community bonds, and promote well-being by valuing parents' Funds of Knowledge. Through dialogue, parents gain deeper insights into their social contexts, becoming advocates for their children and education. The club’s approach offers educators a framework to reassess teaching practices, integrating these perspectives into K-12 education.

World Connections Through CKLA LIMITED
Saturday March 22, 2025 2:00pm - 2:50pm PDT

Our students are at the heart of learning and are being exposed to new cultures and ideas at such a young age. We are responsible for showing them how this impacts their lives. We need to foster a community within the classroom where students feel safe to share and learn new things. This means going beyond just what the curriculum expects you to teach in order to break down learning barriers! Students are more open to learning when you include them and their customs and cultures. With this presentation, educators will learn how we can incorporate cultural connections with the curriculum we have at hand. CKLA is rich with historical and fundamental information students may not yet be aware of. Through the information learned in this presentation, you will be able to expose students to beneficial, cultural experiences within the walls of the classroom.
